Chapter Sixteen

The early morning air was crisp and clear, perfect for a run. When Kenna and Paul finished, she had her usual cup of sugary coffee, then excused herself to get ready for her meeting.

“No breakfast?”

She shook her head. “I’ll get something when I finish.”

She chose carefully, dressing in navy slacks, a white silk blouse, and a light blue jacket.

“Looking very professional today,” said Paul. “Where are you going?”

“I’m going to interview Steven Kane, David’s former Public Defender.” She tucked business cards into her jacket, made sure her phone was charged, and reached for the door.

“Wait. I thought that was tomorrow.”

“It is, but I something tells me I’ll have more luck if I catch him off guard.”

Kenna headed for downtown Trenton and managed to find a spot in a parking garage only two blocks away from her destination. She pulled her jacket close around her and headed out to locate the building. It was chillier in the city, where the state office buildings threw shadows across the sidewalks and the wind swirled around every corner. She checked the address Stephanie gave her and compared it to the brown brick building in front of her. The sign next to the door told her that she’d found the administrative offices of the Commerce and Economic Development Commission.

“Here goes nothing” she mumbled. “After all, what’s the worst he could do? Tell me to come back tomorrow?”

She entered the building and waited patiently while two people ahead of her signed in. When it was her turn, she smiled at the receptionist.

“I’m Kenna Devlin. I’m here to meet with Steven Kane.”

The receptionist didn’t look at her, just gestured to an oversized logbook. “Sign in, please.”

She slid a plastic pass across the counter and pointed to a set of uncomfortable looking chairs. “You can have a seat over there.”

Kenna clipped the pass on her jacket. “Can you just point me toward his office?”

“No, you have to be escorted.”

The woman picked up the phone and pressed a button.

“I have a visitor for Steven Kane. Kenna Devlin. Can someone come down and escort her to Mr. Kane’s office?”

The receptionist ended the call, still having not looked Kenna in the face.

“Mr. Kane is coming down to meet you. He says about five minutes.” She pointed to the chairs again. “Wait there.”

Kenna debated trying to sneak past the security guard but decided to take Steven at his word and wait. She checked her email and waited close to ten minutes before the elevator doors opened.

A man with neatly trimmed light brown hair, wearing a navy suit, white shirt, and purple tie stepped off the elevator. He looked to be in his late thirties or early forties.

If this was Steven Kane, she thought, he’d been awfully young when he defended a notorious murderer like David Bennington. Not for the first time, she wondered why no one more experienced stepped forward to defend him.

The man looked at the receptionist, who gifted him with a smile and pointed at Kenna.

He walked toward her and held out his hand.
